Hitch on Iraq
The always interesting Christopher Hitchens shares his thoughs about Iraq with Peter Robinson of the Hoover Institution. Hop on over and watch the video. Unfortunately they've used some format that doesn't allow me to post it here like you can do with a Youtube video.
A few quick comments on what he has to say
Hitch says that our 2 main goals in Iraq are or should be 1) a devastating defeat for al Qaeda, and 2) putting Kurdistan out of bounds for anyone to attack/oppress them.
Makes sense to me. I'd go farther, but certainly a defeat for AQI would be a terrible loss for the worldwide jihadist movement. Why the anti-war crowd can't see this is beyond me.
Starting at about 19:40 Hitch generally doesn't buy into an analogy with the Vietnam War, but quotes Tom Friedman as saying to the anti-war left,
If you think that the that the so-called Iraqi insurgents are the Viet Cong you're making the biggest mistake of your life. If they're anything, they're the Khmer Rouge. Now how do you like your argument?" and then "the standards set by the Khmer Rouge are hotly emulated by the forces of bin Ladenism.
True enough.
Where I disagree with him is in his view of religion. His book God is Not Great is disgraceful, and that's about the best I can say about it. He's positively hateful on the subject, if you ever listen to him about it. I'll say a prayer for him tonight, that at some point he will hear God speaking to him and come around. It's never too late for anyone.
At the end he reveals his favorite Republican candidate. You'll have to watch the video to find out who, I'm not giving that away.
