The Pledge of Allegiance
When I was a child I used to love watching Red Skelton's variety show on TV. Skelton was quite funny, but there was also a serious side to him. I was reminded recently of his "Pledge of Allegiance" skit, and thought that he explained what it means to be an American so well that it would be appropriate for an Independence Day post.
Sad to say, but it's hard to imagine many in show business today doing anything similar.

snake-hunters sez,
Yes Tom,
And If that heartfelt talk were given to today's
students, and some parents heard about it, that
teacher might easily be reprimanded, or even
threatened with dismissal in San Francisco, or
Berkeley, or Los Angeles. Sadness Is The Reward
of Dedicated Teachers Today.

Red Skelton was a true patriot. I don't know what political party he was affiliated with, if any. However, even many Dems in the bygone days of entertainment were staunch patriots.
I grew up watching Red Skelton's show on CBS. As a teenager, I wrote him a fan letter of sorts -- about a movie he made (The Clowns?). Mr. Skelton actually sent me a handwritten and gracious response!
Back in 1971, I had the privilege of seeing him perform live here in the D.C. area. Talk about a dynamic performer!
Interestingly, the man suffered from terrible stage fright. He was so nervous before every show that he vomited immediately before taking the stage.
