Benjamin Netanyahu Takes Washington by Storm

On Tuesday, May 24, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed joint session of Congress, which gave him several standing ovations. via Powerline:

We're proud in Israel that over 1 million Arab citizens of Israel have been enjoying these rights for decades.

Of the 300 million Arabs in the Middle East and North Africa, only Israel's Arab citizens enjoy real democratic rights.

Now, I want you to stop for a second and think about that. Of those 300 million Arabs, less than one-half of 1 percent are truly free and they're all citizens of Israel.

This startling fact reveals a basic truth: Israel is not what is wrong with about the Middle East; Israel is what is right about the Middle East

You got that right, Mr Prime Minister

Full text here.

More key excerpts:

In an unstable Middle East, Israel is the one anchor of stability. In a region of shifting alliances, Israel is America's unwavering ally. Israel has always been pro-American. Israel will always be pro-American.

My friends, you don't have to -- you don't need to do nation- building in Israel. We're already built.

You don't need to export democracy to Israel. We've already got it.

And you don't need to send American troops to Israel. We defend ourselves.
...

This path of liberty is not paved by elections alone. It's paved when governments permit protests in town squares, when limits are placed on the powers of rulers, when judges are beholden to laws and not men, and when human rights cannot be crushed by tribal loyalties or mob rule.

Israel has always embraced this path in a Middle East that has long rejected it. In a region where women are stoned, gays are hanged, Christians are persecuted, Israel stands out. It is different.
...

Now, we've achieved historic peace agreements with Egypt and Jordan, and these have held up for decades.

I remember what it was like before we had peace. I was nearly killed in a firefight inside the Suez Canal -- I mean that literally -- inside the Suez Canal. I was going down to the bottom with a 40- pound pack -- ammunition pack on my back, and somebody reached out to grab me. And they're still looking for the guy who did such a stupid thing.

I was nearly killed there.

And I remember battling terrorists along both banks of the Jordan.

Too many Israelis have lost loved ones, and I know their grief.

I lost my brother. So no one in Israel wants to return to those terrible days.
...

I recognize that in a genuine peace, we'll be required to give up parts of the ancestral Jewish homeland. And you have to understand this: In Judea and Samaria, the Jewish people are not foreign occupiers.

We're not the British in India. We're not the Belgians in the Congo. This is the land of our forefathers, the land of Israel, to which Abraham brought the idea of one God, where David set out to confront Goliath, and where Isaiah saw a vision of eternal peace.

No distortion of history -- and boy, am I reading a lot of distortions of history lately, old and new -- no distortion of history could deny the 4,000-year-old bond between the Jewish people and the Jewish land.
...

You see, our conflict has never been about the establishment of a Palestinian state. It's always been about the existence of the Jewish state. This is what this conflict is about.

In 1947 the U.N. voted to partition the land into a Jewish state and an Arab state. The Jews said "Yes." The Palestinians said "No."

In recent years, the Palestinians twice refused generous offers by Israeli prime ministers to establish a Palestinian state on virtually all the territory won by Israel in the Six-Day War.

They were simply unwilling to end the conflict.

And I regret to say this: They continue to educate their children to hate. They continue to name public squares after terrorists. And, worst of all, they continue to perpetuate the fantasy the Israel will one day be flooded by the descendants of Palestinian refugees.

My friends, this must come to an end.
...

I say to President Abbas, "Tear up your pact with Hamas, sit down and negotiate, make peace with the Jewish state. And if you do, I promise you this: Israel will not be the last country to welcome a Palestinian state as the new member of the United Nations. It will be the first to do so."

My friends, the momentous trials of the last century and the unfolding events of this century attest to the decisive role of the United States in defending peace and advancing freedom. Providence entrusted the United States to be the guardian of liberty. All people who cherish freedom owe a profound debt of gratitude to your great nation.

Among the most grateful nations is my nation, the people of Israel, who have fought for their liberty and survival against impossible odds in ancient and modern times alike.

I speak on behalf of the Jewish people and the Jewish state when I say to you, representatives of America, thank you.

Thank you. Thank you for your unwavering support for Israel. Thank you for ensuring that the flame of freedom burns bright throughout the world.

May God bless all of you, and may God forever bless the United States of America.

Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you.

He speaks words of wisdom that we should all take to heart.

Tom, Bibi said "We're not the British in India. We're not the Belgians in the Congo. This is the land of our forefathers, the land of Israel, to which Abraham brought the idea of one God, where David set out to confront Goliath."

No, they are not those things. They are European Jews, Ashkanazi, (vs Sephardic) in lands that were the Biblical Israel. They are not descended from the original Israelites, but from converts to Judaism after the Diaspora. Bibi's real name is not Benjamin and his real surname is Mileikowsky (and he has gone through three wives). Like those who are Muslims first, then citizens of a country, they are Jews first. They will never convert. They form a theocracy.

I know those people very well, and I admire their intellect and prowess. Their influence over the years caused me to disbelieve all other religions except theirs, well, I only believe just the idea of the one God, and the laws of Moses, the Ten Commandments. They would not accept me (well maybe the Reformed Jews would); according to their Conservatives you are born a Jew or you are not.

I worked in a hospital for 35 years where I got to know them very well. They related to me how in the early years of the 20th century their parents came from Russia and Poland, etc., later from Germany (those showed me some numbers tattoed on their arms--and they hated God for not saving their families).

They told me how the land was a desert and they worked so hard in their kibbutzes and they turned it into a garden. They became doctors and professors. They have always been the leading intellectuals and premier experts everywhere they went.

I keep reading about this very sticky point---the illegal settlements. They are illegal in the eyes of most of the free world because they agreed to hold to certain areas, but they ignore that. Bibi calls it "natural growth".

Do we call the illegal immigration of Mexicans "natural growth" for migrating to our Promised Land? The Israeli Army used to dismantle these illegal settlements, then they stopped just because their own Hasidic radicals were the tail that wagged the Israeli dog.

Were it not for the modern Israel being in the way, the free world could force reforms in the surrounding radical Muslim enclaves, and that would bring peace if they are willing, and near annihilation if not. Is not our President still the defacto leader of the free world, who knows he holds the biggest stick, and is willing to punish those who threaten peace?

The free world needs Israel to cooperate in giving the Muslim radicals in Palestine enough rope to hang themselves. IF Israel would just stop expanding the illegal settlements, and a temporary peace could be worked out, then when the Muslims violate that peace as they are wont to do, we would have no reason to hesitate to do more in that area (with the cooperation cooperation of Russia, etc.)

Bibi has been known to say, "I know what America is, America is a thing you can move very easily, move it in the right direction. They won't get in the way". So who is throwing who under the bus? Our plans to have the Muslims hang themselves is impeded by the Israeli tail wanting to wag the Western dog. Bibi even has his spies here in the US; he keeps trying to get one of them out of one of our prisons somewhere.

Because we politically cannot support Israel without also giving economic support to the Muslim countries, we put our economy in peril with the virtual "Jizyah" of foreign aid we provide the Middle East.

Bibi also said, "Providence entrusted the United States to be the guardian of liberty. All people who cherish freedom owe a profound debt of gratitude to your great nation". Well, I wish he would be grateful enough to cooperate with us just a little bit and stop the settlements for the time being. But maybe his radicals would assassinate him if he did so. They are as violent as any Jihadist.

Those ultra-orthodox Israelis are also as backward as the Muslim ayatollahs. They are focused on their extreme beliefs. Did you know that their newspaper, the Der [?] published a photo of Obama's staff watching the killing of Bin Laden, but first they edited out the image of Hillary and the other woman there because they never publish photos of women in that paper because it would be "sexually suggestive"? Shades of the Taliban!

I recall in the hospital and other places that the Hassidim would not even look at me, much less shake my hand. I had to open the doors for them, I could not enter before them, nor would they ever hold the door for me! They walk with a fast arrogant swagger, never making eye contact with anyone. Their synagogues keep the women behind screens and they have to wear veils, just like the radical Muslims! Israel has its bickering liberals and ultra-right wingers, like here, I guess.

Oy vey!

Emilie,

Thank you for your comment and for stopping by. My apologies that it's taken so long for me to respond.

My, but your life experiences are fascinating!

If I could create a state from scratch it would not, of course, look like Israel. I certainly wouldn't limit immigration to people of one religion.

But you go too far when you say Israel is a theocracy. Our Christian heritage forms the basis of our laws here in the USA, but that doesn't make us theocratic. Ditto with Israel.

I'm no expert on the history of the Jews, but my understanding is that current Jews are quite a mix of those descended from ancient Israel and post 70AD converts. As you know I've been to Israel, and I saw white, black, and olive-skinned Jews.

As we've discussed before, you are dead-on right about the foreign aid.

Know that I'm not a fan of everything Israel does. I think the Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard should stay in prison until he dies. And I was very upset about Israel selling military technology to the Chinese, and was happy when Bush stopped cooperating with Israel for awhile until they changed their ways.

And I'm with you on the religious extremists.

Take care,

Tom

Tom, you said that my life experiences are fascinating. Well, that is because I am old and multi-cultural and multi-racial, and like you, I traveled and immersed myself in other cultures abroad and here. I can no longer travel, so I live through others' experiences. We are getting to be an ever more diverse country.

I think many countries are becoming more diverse. You see black, white, and olive skinned folks in the Muslim countries too, and in Europe. Some countries, though, remain closed to immigration, like many Asian communist, Muslim, or Buddhist countries like Japan, Korea, Vietnam, China. I think some are that way because they are too small to handle more immigrants, and others like China are just too overpopulated already.

Yes, I am suspicious of Israel's and Bibi's motives. I saw where he recently met with the president of Russia. I fear he may be trying to play the big powers against each other to get what he wants. That is dangerous for all including Israel.

I am always happy to see that you are willing to experience different cultures in South America and the Middle East. You won't regret it, and someday you will have a young person tell you that you have had fascinating life experiences.
